10 mins: Brief overview of the chapter and SFETT and what they did, and
explanation about our activity. Divide students into groups (about 35
students/5 per group= 7 groups...I know this is a big topic for debate in our
seminar group--whether to have lots of little groups doing individual videos or
one big group. I\\\\'ll explain why I think this method is better at the end)
15 mins: Groups view pictures and brainstorm about what they might make
their videos about.
20 mins: Storyboarding using chart paper and markers.
15 mins: We show them how to use the editing program and some of it\\\\'s
features (it\\\\'s better to do this now than at the beginning because they\\\\'ll
probably forget it by this time)
30 mins: They do their editing and putting it together. We can take
pictures and make our own video at this time, if we want to do that.
15 mins: Break. We can use this time to set up anything we need to to show
the videos.
10 mins: Show the videos.
30-45 mins: Discuss important skills learned, emphasise use of this tech in
the classroom, class can ask questions. This rough schedule adds up to 2h 45m.
So to make sure that we all take part in the seminar and have no one just standing off to the side, I suggest:
-The two of you who know how to work the video program (sorry, I don't know anyone's names!) can put together a plan of how you will teach the class to do it. Also, if we could arrive early before the seminar so as many of us as possible could learn the basics to help the class it would be great.
-Three or four of us could work on a way to describe the chapter and talk about the main points and things like that.
-That leaves 5 of us...it will be these people who go around and help the class while they do stuff and make critical suggestions...aka basically look like your contributing something :) I know this isn't ideal but how the heck are we going to find something for all 11 or 12 of us to do?! --Christie
If we add a hook to the beginning of the presentation to get everyone's attention (5 mins), a couple more people could be doing that. Also, I think that the placemat activity is a great way to engage the class in discussion. So those 3 or four people who would have described the chapter can lead this activity, also by knowing if they need to touch on other main points if the group discussions did not touch on them. Our powerpoint could outline some of these main points after the fact, just incase.
The rest of those 5 people (who would not have a lot to do) could work on the powerpoint presentation. Since everyone has different strengths, this is a great opportunity for everyone to contribute to the group.
Personally, I am more comfortable speaking in front of a group. If everyone posts their strengths/preferences of a role in this group, then we can assign roles for everyone to take part in.
